Managing our carbon footprint

We calculate our carbon footprint by capturing data from our corporate operations  in order to enable carbon offsetting company wide.  In 2018, Fidelis Insurance offset 125% of total carbon emissions and that increased to 150% in 2019.

In 2020, due to the pandemic, Fidelis Insurance' footprint was much smaller than in previous years. Whilst a smaller carbon footprint is good for the planet, we still wanted to support global sustainable projects, so we chose to offset 200% for 2020 to continue to make a difference to our chosen projects, Communitree and Hazda Hunter Gatherers. For 2021, Fidelis Insurance offset 150% of carbon emissions.

  • Communitree is Nicaragua’s biggest reforestation programme, providing long term income to local communities and drawing 1.5m tonnes of CO2 back into the earth thanks to the 10 million+ new trees planted by this project.
  • Hazda Hunter Gatherers, works to protect existing forests with ‘the last of the first’, an African hunter gatherer tribe who have lived in the Yaeda Valley for 50,000 years. This project is the winner of the 2019 UN Equator Award for nature based sustainable development and it works to strengthen the indigenous land use rights of the community.

Last year, business travel and electricity were our main emission sources at approximately 60% and 27% of our measured carbon emissions respectively.

Engaged Employees- Fidelis MGU Green Team

The Fidelis MGU Green Team is made up of colleagues from our international offices. We monitor our energy usage, waste production and total carbon footprint to ensure Fidelis MGU stays vigilant in reducing its negative impact on the environment.  All our employees are responsible for working with the Green Team to help us achieve our aims, targets and objectives.

Employee Awareness and Training

Fidelis MGU is committed to encouraging employees to recycle as much as possible, both at home and at work. We provide regular training and Q&A sessions to help employees with their efforts.  Regular communications are circulated to all staff keeping them informed about news, updates on our projects and useful green initiatives. Employees are encouraged to share their ideas and experiences in order to help the Green Team.

We take advantage of local recycling and waste management schemes to avoid unnecessary landfill wherever possible.  We use recycled, sustainable sources for paper and have distributed reusable coffee cups and tote bags to all staff. We also regularly test new sustainable products for potential adoption.

Below is Our vision for the future which acts as our guide for all Green Team discussions:

  • Eliminate single use plastics in our offices
  • Recycle over 90% of our waste
  • Engage more in our local communities to help local projects e.g., via additional support through employee volunteering.
  • Establish regular and transparent reporting on our initiatives
